A night shift is a schedule that spans overnight hours. Under Brazilian labor law, employees working during these hours receive a night differential and night hours are counted with specific rules.
To ensure the system calculates hours and the night differential correctly, the employee must be assigned to a night‑shift schedule and, when a punch crosses midnight, it must be marked as a night shift.
Administrators and supervisors with permission to edit punches can perform these adjustments.
-
Verify the employee’s schedule
-
Open the People module and locate the employee or filter by Schedule. Check which schedule is assigned to them.
Or, access the employee's Super Punch and check the Schedule column. You can even click on Schedule to open it in another tab.
Make sure the schedule includes the overnight period (for example, 10:00 pm – 5:00 am).
Adjust the schedule in the Schedules module if needed.

Understand how the system counts night shifts
The system records the last punch of a night shift on the day the schedule starts. A shift starting at 10:00 pm and ending at 5:00 am will be fully attributed to the start date.
- If your company's scenario involves calculating the night shifts at the day the shift ends, follow the steps in this article for activation and practical applications.
- The punches in Super Punch will appear as shown below, where all punches will be linked to the day the shift started, but only those registered after midnight will have an indication below the time, showing that they were registered the following day:
-
Adjust a night shift punch on the web
-
Navigate to Attendance > Create Punch to open the side panel.
Or, select a missing punch and
+Create Punch.
Select the employee, date, time and punch type.
Check Night shift – continue schedule after midnight to link the punch to the previous day.
-
Enter the location and reason, then click Confirm.
Tip: Use this option only when the schedule crosses midnight; the system automatically handles normal punches.

-
Adjust a night shift punch using the mobile app
In the Day.io app, go to the punch adjustments screen and locate the record.
Correct the date and time.
Enable the Add punch to the next day toggle to indicate the punch continues into the next day.
Save and check that the punch appears on the correct day.
Tips or troubleshooting
If you forget to mark Night shift, the punch will be treated as belonging to the next day, which may create missing punches or overtime errors.
Only users with punch‑editing permission can make adjustments.
Best practices
Always verify the employee’s schedule before editing a punch.
Provide clear justifications to maintain an audit trail.
Encourage employees to punch correctly using the app to avoid manual adjustments.
