Yes. More than one manager can manage the Punches and Requests of the same employees, but the configuration is different for each feature.
- For Punches, the manager must have a Supervisor profile, access to the employees, and access to the screens used to manage punch records;
- For Requests, both managers must be part of the same supervision hierarchy, and the Approval Flow must use All supervisors in hierarchy.
How can I allow a second manager to approve Punches?
You can give the second manager access to the same employees through permissions.
First, review the Supervisor permission level:
- Click your initials or profile picture in the upper-right corner;
- Go to Settings;
- Open Permissions;
- Select the Supervisor level;
- Under Attendance, review the permissions related to punch management.
For a Supervisor who needs to review and approve punches, check primarily:
- View Punches: allows access to Attendance > Punches;
- Super Punch: allows access to Super Punch and the employees’ punch records.
The Supervisor profile can review and approve or decline records for employees under their management.
If the manager also needs to perform other actions through Super Punch, open the Super Punch subpermissions and enable only those required:
- Clear punches;
- Create punches only for empty slots;
- Create punches for non-empty slots;
- Organize punches.
These subpermissions expand the actions available in Super Punch, but they do not need to be enabled just to allow punch approval.
How can I give the second manager access to the same employees?
After reviewing the Supervisor level:
- Go to People;
- Open the second manager’s profile;
- Go to Details > Permission roles;
- Click + Add Permission Role;
- Select the Supervisor level;
- Under CAN ACCESS TO, choose which people will be available to the manager;
- Access can be configured by:
- People;
- Teams;
- Departments;
- Subsidiaries;
- Cost center;
- All company;
- Click Apply.
This allows two different managers to access the same employees for punch management even if they are not part of the same supervision hierarchy.
How can I allow two managers to approve the same Requests?
For Requests, simply expanding visibility under CAN ACCESS TO is not enough.
Approval depends on the Teams and Supervisors structure and the Approval Flow. The category’s Permission roles field controls who can submit that type of Request; it does not define who can approve it.
For two Supervisors to view and approve Requests from the same employees, they must be part of the same supervision hierarchy.
Scenario 1: the two managers do not have a hierarchical relationship yet
Suppose that:
- Manager A supervises the employees;
- Manager B also needs to view and approve these employees’ Requests;
- Manager A and Manager B currently have no hierarchical relationship.
In this case, one way to create the required hierarchy is to place one of the Supervisors on the Team supervised by the other.
For example:
Employees → Manager A → Manager B
In this scenario:
- Manager A remains the employees’ direct Supervisor;
- Manager B becomes Manager A’s Supervisor;
- Manager B becomes a higher level in the same hierarchy.
Then configure the Request type with All supervisors in hierarchy.
This allows both the direct Supervisor and the Supervisor above them to participate in the approval.
Scenario 2: one manager is already the other manager’s Supervisor
This scenario can naturally occur in structures such as:
Employee → Manager → Director
In this example:
- The Manager is the employee’s direct Supervisor;
- The Director is the Manager’s Supervisor;
- Therefore, the Director acts as a higher-level Supervisor.
You do not need to create a new relationship between them. Simply confirm that the hierarchy is configured correctly and use All supervisors in hierarchy in the Approval Flow.
When this option is used, Supervisors connected to the employee through the hierarchy can be considered at that approval level.
How to configure “All supervisors in hierarchy”
- Go to Absence & Vacation;
- Open Requests Settings;
- Select the category and Request type;
- Locate Approval Flow;
- At the level that should use Supervisors, select All supervisors in hierarchy;
- Save.
Before completing the setup, confirm that the relationship is correct:
Employee → Direct Supervisor → Supervisor’s Supervisor
If the second manager is not part of this hierarchy, simply having the Supervisor permission or being able to view the employee on other screens will not be enough to approve their Requests.
Punches and Requests: what is the difference?
| Need | How to configure |
|---|---|
| Second manager needs to view/approve Punches | Assign the Supervisor permission, enable the required Attendance access, and configure the employees under CAN ACCESS TO |
| Second manager needs to use Super Punch | Enable Super Punch for the permission level and grant access to the employees |
| Second manager needs to perform other actions in Super Punch | Also configure the Create, Clear, or Organize punch subpermissions as needed |
| Two managers need to approve the same Requests | Place both managers in the same supervision hierarchy and use All supervisors in hierarchy |
| Level 2 manager already supervises the Level 1 manager | Keep the hierarchy and use All supervisors in hierarchy |
| Second manager only received visibility under CAN ACCESS TO | This may resolve Punch access, but it is not enough for Request approval |
Practical example
Marina is the Supervisor of the Operations Team. Ricardo also needs to help manage the employees on this Team.
For Punches, Ricardo can receive a Supervisor permission with access to the Operations Team. With View Punches and Super Punch enabled for his permission level, he will be able to review records for employees within the granted scope.
For Requests, simply giving Ricardo access to the Operations Team is not enough.
If Ricardo also needs to approve Requests:
- Marina can be assigned to a Team supervised by Ricardo;
- The hierarchy becomes Employees → Marina → Ricardo;
- Configure the Request type with All supervisors in hierarchy.
This way, Marina remains the direct Supervisor and Ricardo becomes part of the higher approval level.
Tips and troubleshooting
- The second manager can approve Punches but cannot find the Requests: confirm that they are actually part of the direct Supervisor’s hierarchy and that the Approval Flow uses All supervisors in hierarchy.
- The manager cannot find employees in Attendance or Super Punch: review View Punches, Super Punch, and the scope configured under CAN ACCESS TO.
- The second manager has no relationship with the first manager: for Requests, create the supervision hierarchy by assigning one Supervisor to a Team supervised by the other.
- The user is included in the Request’s Permission roles but cannot approve: this field controls who can create the Request. Review the Approval Flow.
- The Supervisor already directly manages another Supervisor: confirm the structure and enable All supervisors in hierarchy.
Best practices
- Configure the required access for Punches and Requests separately;
- For Punches, grant access only to the people or organizational structures the second manager actually needs to manage;
- Do not enable Super Punch editing subpermissions when the manager only needs to review and approve records;
- For Requests, keep the Supervisor hierarchy up to date;
- Use All supervisors in hierarchy only when all levels of that structure should actually participate in approval;
- Test a Request after changing Teams, Supervisors, or the Approval Flow.
Frequently asked questions
Can two managers approve the same employee’s punches?
Yes. The second manager can receive the Supervisor permission and access to the same employees. Also review View Punches and Super Punch, depending on the screens they will use.
Do both managers need to be in the same hierarchy to approve Punches?
No. For Punches, access can be expanded through permissions and the scope configured under CAN ACCESS TO.
Can two Supervisors without a hierarchical relationship approve the same Requests?
Not just by having the Supervisor permission. To use All supervisors in hierarchy, a hierarchical relationship must exist between them, for example by placing one Supervisor on the other’s Team.
If a Director is already the Supervisor of a Manager, can they approve Requests from that Manager’s employees?
Yes, as long as the hierarchy is configured correctly and All supervisors in hierarchy is selected in the Approval Flow.
Does giving access to the same Team under “CAN ACCESS TO” allow Request approval?
Not by itself. That scope may expand visibility in other features, but Request approval depends on the hierarchy and the Approval Flow.
Which permissions should I review for Punch management?
For a Supervisor, primarily review View Punches and Super Punch, as well as the employee scope under CAN ACCESS TO. If they need to create, clear, or organize records through Super Punch, also configure the corresponding subpermissions.
What does “All supervisors in hierarchy” mean?
It means that Supervisors connected to the employee through the Team and supervision hierarchy can be considered at that level of the Approval Flow.
Does the Permission roles field in a Request type define who can approve it?
No. It defines who can submit the Request. Approval is determined by the Approval Flow.
