This feature lets you structure your company by creating departments and assigning them to employees.
Departments organise people by area (e.g. HR, Sales) and are used in reports and filters.
Departments are usually created when you start using Day.io and adjusted as your organisation changes.
Key actions or configuration
- Create a new department
- Navigate to Company Structure > Departments.
- Click New Department.
- In the Code field, enter an internal identifier (e.g.
001). - In the Name field, enter the department name.
- Click Create to save.

- Edit or remove an existing department
- In the same screen, click the desired department row.
- Use Edit to adjust the Code or Name and click Save.
- Use the trash icon to remove the department (only if it is not linked to employees).
- Assign a department to an employee
- Go to People and search for the employee.
- Click the employee’s name to open their profile.
- Go to Details > Employee details.
- In the Department field, select the desired department from the list.
- Click Save at the bottom.

Tips or Troubleshooting
- Permission denied: make sure your user has access to the Settings area.

- Standardise naming (e.g. “Marketing”, “Finance”) to keep reports consistent.
- Review the department list periodically to avoid duplicates or obsolete items.

Can I change the department code? Yes, provided the code is not used as an integration key. Click Edit to modify it.
